Computers become infected with viruses and worms from many means including: mysterious email attachments, running programs obtained from untrusted distributors, permitting others to share access to your folders or accessing folders on other unprotected systems. The first line of defense against viruses is up-to-date anti-virus software. Members of the University Community may obtain free, self-updating anti-virus software from the Office of Information Technology. This software may be freely installed on computers both on campus and at home. This software is provided through the Helpdesk. Remember that anti-virus software is only as good as the virus definitions it is using. If your software is not getting regular updates, you are not protected from the hundreds of new viruses released each month.
