Keeping you Operating System (OS) up to date is a critical part of computer security. Most flaws in OS security are widely exploited by criminals within days of a patch being released, so setting your OS to update autmatically is key to your data's well-being.
If you're a Windows user, Microsoft has a document explaining how to activate automatic updates here. You can also use this link to manually update your Windows Operating System.
Mac users need to remember that they, too must update. While the Mac tends to be somewhat more secure, one sure way into a Mac illicitly is via an unpatched OS vulnerability, and there are quite a few. Apple has an excellent overview of their OS update feature and how to automate it here. Again, you can also manually update your Macintosh Operating System
.
Linux users, you are NOT exempt from OS updates, but it's a bit more complicated. Each distribution has it's own way of going about this, so for now you're on your own. If you need assistance, try the UMD Linux Users Group or contact OIT Security and we'll point you in the right direction for your distro.
